my story

good juju exchange was founded off the idea of “look good, feel good.”

when Julia was in high school, she struggled with anxiety and depression (what teenagers don’t these days) and made a New Year’s resolution to dress up every single day to school. she realized that her new found style helped almost more than therapy?!? and somehow was magically cured✨

since that shift, Julia has fallen in love with fashion, and even worked in the luxury fashion industry for a few years as a retail manager. she found the price points to be ridiculous and, honestly, a huge scam, so she wanted to go back to her roots with the thrift stores. she felt she could create something no one else has seen before, especially when it comes to personal styling (sorry, Nordstrom!) so she did the damn thing, and thus… Good Juju Exchange was born! in a nail salon while complaining to her mother.

I’ve been trying to find the words. I don’t think there will ever be anything that I can say as I’m still in disbelief, shock, and denial myself. NO ONE was talking about the hurricane until the night before it hit. in Florida, I was used to everyone talking about it and knowing how to prepare. the infrastructure is different there. I woke up one morning out of power, not thinking much of it. then I realized I didn’t have any cell service and none of my texts were going through. I figured it’d take a few minutes. my next door neighbor walked in our house and said we had to take a walk around and see what was happening. I was expecting the usual, some branches, some flooding. the first thing we saw was our neighbors tree house completely destroyed. we take a walk around and see trees everywhere, the oldest, largest trees, uprooted, covering roads, on top of houses, on top of power lines. with no cell service, we didn’t even know it was worse 5-10 minutes west of us. that’s where most of the flooding and deaths were. keep in mind, there are still 12,000 reported missing persons. first thing I thought of was to check on my business, which many of you know I just started doing full time. we got all of our news from word on the street, so we’d go downtown and walk around to talk to people. every single road going in and out of asheville was closed, and cell service was out in the entire region. people trapped in their homes had no way of asking for help. I wanted to check on my bus so desperately, but it wasn’t even safe to go to that part of town. I was lucky enough to have a friend check on it for me, and said that area wasn’t affected as bad, so the bus is still standing. I know there was a minor leak in the bus on the ceiling that I had been meaning to fix, so I still don’t know if the interior held up. my roommates and I evacuated after 3 days of no power, water, or cell service. we started driving south (the only highway leaving asheville that had opened up the evening before) until we got cell service and were able to find a hotel. when we packed, we thought we’d only be gone a week. we then found out officials were saying it could be 3-6 weeks.
